Memorial weekend wedding

My cousin Jenn and her new husband Jose were married yesterday in an intimate wedding of family and close friends in White bear lake. It was great to meet Jose and also to spend time with family. We look forward to visiting them in Washington sometime in the future-- could be a while though.

North shore getaway

This past weekend 5 good friends and I headed up to the north shore for a relaxing retreat of sorts. We stayed at the Larsmont Cottages, which is just south of Two Harbors. We spent the weekend hiking at Gooseberry Falls (above), game playing, reading, eating and enjoying our time together.

A number of questions come to mind upon analysis of this statue. First off, why is he wearing knee high boots and no pants? Second, why is his head so disproportional? Third, did someone steal something out of his hand? Fourth, what's up with his mangled hand?

Garden time!

We haven't quite planted everything yet, but here is the gist of it. More basil will go in the bottom right. This year we have planted: lettuce, broccoli, brussel sprouts, zucchini, tons of varieties of peppers, lots of basil, flat leaf parsley, some weird japanese thing that goes in spring rolls, rosemary, sage, cilantro, radishes and carrots. oh and 10 varieties of mostly heirloom tomatoes on the south side of the house.

One new addition this year is that Steve installed a drip hose in the veggie garden and then a timer on the hose. It makes for basically effortless watering in the morning.

Another new addition this year is that we are giving a go at hops. We expect it to fill the pergola. We are hoping a couple of our beer-brewing neighbors will then process the hops for us. We haven't told them that yet though.

Perhaps this photo doesn't quite do the backyard justice. Everything is insanely giant. It is hard to believe that a little more than one year ago it was a bunch of dead sod or even compared to June 15th of last year (below).
